definition

What is Shopify development?

Shopify development is building or customizing an ecommerce store on the Shopify platform: theme design, app development, catalog and checkout configuration, and the integrations that connect your store to inventory, fulfillment, and marketing tools. It covers a first storefront through a high-volume Shopify Plus build.

Shopify development overview

▼ key takeaways

  • Shopify merchants processed $378.4 billion in gross merchandise volume in fiscal 2025, up 29% year over year (Shopify FY2025 results).

  • A theme customization and a custom Shopify build both look finished at launch; the difference shows up the first time checkout logic or catalog scale needs something the theme was not built for.

  • Global retail ecommerce is projected to reach $6.42 trillion in 2025, 20.5% of all retail sales worldwide (eMarketer, 2025) - the platform decision behind a store matters more as that share grows.

  • Standard Shopify and Shopify Plus solve different problems; picking the wrong one costs either money or missing features.

// shopify vs. custom ecommerce

Why choose Shopify over a custom-built storefront? Speed to launch and a mature app ecosystem for the plumbing every store needs: payments, tax calculation, shipping rate lookups, fraud detection. Building that from scratch on a custom stack means rebuilding infrastructure Shopify has already solved at scale. The tradeoff shows up on the checkout experience, where Shopify controls more of the flow than a fully custom build would, and on very high-volume or highly specific catalog logic, where Shopify Plus or a headless Shopify build using Hydrogen becomes the right conversation to have. We will tell you honestly which one your store actually needs.

capabilities - seven

What our Shopify development team does.

Seven capabilities, one goal: a storefront that converts and holds up as your catalog and order volume grow.

  1. 01Shopify theme development

A storefront built or customized around your catalog and brand, not a marketplace theme stretched past what it was designed for.

  2. 02Shopify app development

Custom app logic for functionality the Shopify App Store does not cover, wired directly into your store through Shopify's APIs.

  3. 03Shopify store setup

A first storefront configured properly from the start: catalog structure, shipping, taxes, and payment gateways set up right the first time.

  4. 04Shopify migration services

Moving a store to Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, or a custom platform, without losing product data or order history.

  5. 05Shopify Plus development

Custom checkout logic, higher API limits, and B2B-specific features for stores that have outgrown standard Shopify.

  6. 06Shopify performance optimisation

Theme cleanup and app audits that get a slow storefront back to the load times that keep shoppers from bouncing at checkout.

  7. 07Shopify support and maintenance

Ongoing updates, app management, and monitoring, so the store keeps converting after launch day.

the honest part

Why does storefront engineering move revenue?

A slow page, a broken filter, or a checkout step that adds friction costs real revenue on a store that already has traffic. Shopify gives you a fast path to a working store; the engineering decisions on top of that are what decide whether the store converts as well as it loads.

The pattern behind underperforming Shopify stores is consistent: a theme gets stacked with apps until page speed suffers, a catalog structure that made sense at fifty products stops making sense at five thousand, and nobody revisits the checkout flow after the initial launch. None of these are Shopify limitations, they are engineering decisions that were never revisited as the store grew. Syndell treats a Shopify build the same way we treat any production software: scoped properly at the start, then maintained and optimized as your catalog, traffic, and order volume change.

Good design is as little design as possible.

frequently - asked

Five questions,
straight answers.

01

What is included in Shopify development services?

Custom theme development, Shopify app development, store setup and configuration, API integrations, migrations from other platforms, performance optimization, and ongoing support and maintenance.

02

Should we use Shopify or Shopify Plus?

Standard Shopify covers most stores well. Shopify Plus becomes worth the higher cost once you need custom checkout logic, higher API limits, or B2B-specific features at real order volume. We will tell you honestly which tier your store actually needs.

03

How much does Shopify development cost?

It depends on whether you need a theme customization, a fully custom build, or app development on top of an existing store. Book a call and you will get a real estimate against your actual scope.

04

Can you migrate our store from another platform to Shopify?

Yes. Migrations from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, and custom platforms are a core part of our Shopify practice, including product data, customer records, and order history where the source platform supports export.

05

Do you build custom Shopify apps, or just themes?

Both. Theme work covers how the storefront looks and converts; custom app development covers functionality the Shopify App Store does not offer off the shelf, wired in through Shopify's APIs.
