project snapshot

Syndell built a surgical scheduling platform on React JS, Node JS, and DynamoDB, serving healthcare providers across the USA and UK. The system integrates with EMR platforms including Athena, Cerner, and Epic, uses generative AI for CPT/ICD code retrieval, and prioritizes rescheduling by urgency. Live since October 2023.

overview

A surgical scheduling platform serving the USA and UK

Surgical scheduling means reconciling surgeons, vendors, and facility calendars against real constraints: equipment availability, patient readiness, and insurance codes that change by procedure. A healthcare client serving the USA and UK asked Syndell to build a platform that could hold all of that in one system instead of scattered spreadsheets and phone calls. The engagement has run since October 2023, covering web app development, prototyping, UI/UX design, and QA testing, with the database hosted on AWS.

the challenge

What A surgical scheduling platform serving the USA and UK needed to solve

The scheduling problem was never just a calendar problem: it involved unifying disconnected systems, standardizing inconsistent data, and handling insurance codes that most scheduling software leaves to manual lookup.

  • 01

Integrating surgeons, vendors, and facility schedules into one unified system

  • 02

Standardizing diverse data types like operation details, equipment, and patient availability

  • 03

Integrating generative AI for CPT and ICD code retrieval without disrupting system operation

  • 04

Building rescheduling algorithms that prioritize appointments by urgency

  • 05

Analyzing scheduling data to inform insurance policy modifications

  • 06

Integrating with EMR systems including Athena, Cerner, and Epic for patient codes

the solution

What did Syndell build for A surgical scheduling platform serving the USA and UK?

Syndell built the platform on React JS and Node JS with a DynamoDB database on AWS, centering the system on integration: pulling surgeon, vendor, facility, and EMR data into one place instead of leaving it scattered.

  • Robust integration methods streamlining diverse schedules into a single system

  • Standardized protocols for uniform data input and storage across scheduling activities

  • Generative AI capabilities for efficient CPT and ICD code retrieval

  • Urgency-based algorithms prioritizing appointments and modification feasibility

  • Analytics supporting informed insurance policy decisions

  • Seamless integration channels with EMR systems including Athena, Cerner, and Epic

the outcome

What did this project achieve?

The source case study does not publish quantified metrics for this build; the platform shipped as a unified scheduling system addressing every integration and coding challenge identified at the start.

results below are self-reported by the client, as published in the original case study on syndelltech.com

  • One unified scheduling system replacing disconnected surgeon, vendor, and facility calendars

  • AI-assisted CPT and ICD code retrieval reducing manual lookup

  • Urgency-based rescheduling logic supporting faster, more defensible scheduling decisions

  • Direct EMR integration with Athena, Cerner, and Epic for patient code access

what this means for you

If your surgical or clinical scheduling still runs across disconnected calendars and manual code lookups, the risk compounds with every added facility or vendor. Your system needs one source of truth for schedules, codes, and urgency, the way this platform now gives providers across two countries.

why it worked

Healthcare scheduling software has almost no tolerance for a data mismatch: the wrong equipment code or a missed EMR sync can delay a real procedure. Syndell treated integration as the hard problem to solve first, standardizing data formats and connecting to Athena, Cerner, and Epic before layering in the AI-assisted coding and urgency-based rescheduling that make the system genuinely useful day to day. Hosting the database on AWS and building on DynamoDB gave the platform room to handle multiple facilities and vendors without a redesign as it grows across the USA and UK markets it serves.

This project drew on Syndell's web application development practice. Source case study reviewed on the live Syndell site at syndelltech.com.

Questions about this project

01

Can surgical scheduling software integrate with existing EMR systems?

Yes. Syndell built direct integration with EMR platforms including Athena, Cerner, and Epic, so patient codes flow into the scheduling system rather than requiring manual entry.

02

How does AI help with CPT and ICD code retrieval?

The platform uses generative AI to retrieve CPT and ICD codes efficiently, reducing the manual lookup work that otherwise slows down scheduling staff.

03

Can a scheduling system prioritize appointments by urgency?

Yes. Syndell built rescheduling algorithms that weigh urgency and modification feasibility, so higher-priority cases are not stuck behind routine ones.

04

What database supports a multi-facility surgical scheduling platform?

This platform runs on DynamoDB, hosted on AWS, chosen to support surgeon, vendor, and facility data across the USA and UK without a redesign as the client base grows.
